Oh yes and permaculture speaks of Cardoons in the garden for the green manure of those luscious leaves and the deep tape roots that crack open the soils for surrounding plants to get down deeper down for water!

Thanks for the into Chholing! I do love gardening. This is my first experience into blogs so I expect a steep learning curve. But here I go!
My experience for Midwest gardening happens on my 40 acre hobby farm. I have grown heirloom tomatoes, all the regular veggies, broom corn and gourds. I also have a lovely young orchard of nut trees and fruit trees, grape vines and berries. I took Master Gardener classes for Wisconsin and then immediately moved to Arizona! Now I am learning all about Southwest gardening. I love the citrus, cactus, succulents and new decorative plants. I look forward to the blogs and enjoying new gardening buddies!

Chholing, how do I get you on my friends list on this site so we can converse directly about garden stuff. FB is my only other experience I have with this kind of conversing. Would like to see a list of what edibles people are growing. We have a fair amount from years back when we were really into edible landscaping. We have scaled back, when we had a house full of teenagers to do more go out into the woods things. It has been so good to dig, plant and watch the sprouts turn into to fruiting life giving bodies. Blessed Be

Prickly Pears

Here's a question for our group. I am thinking about growing prickly pear cactus in my yard. Does anyone have this plant in their gardens or have any advice/suggestions about growing cacti in the PNW?

I am not sure where to buy my plants as well. Of course I LOVE making jams and preserves so of course prickly pear jam sounds great. Any input is appreciated.

Cardoon

I had no idea what a Cardoon was until I was trying to duplicate a stunning Italian recipe. The plant took two years before it flowered, but the bees were really happy when it did! The stalk grew to almost five feet in height and produced seven fruits/flowers. Love it! Another organic treat for the bees and me… Continue

Tomatillos

I also became very interested in traditional Mexican cooking. So of course a tomatillo plant entered into the garden. I couldn't believe how much fruit it produced on one plant. I cooked down 8 cups of green goodness that will be used to make homemade verde sauce this winter! Of course they are emerald green… Continue

Boron Deficiency in Tomatoes

I don't know if anyone had this problem with their tomatoes. I noticed suddenly one year that my tomoates had become tough and had yellow/whitish streaks in the flesh. The flavor also suffered as well. Finally after three years I found an article that is is a boron deficiency. Just an FYI

Here is an excellent website with photos and descriptions of tomato mineral deficiencies AND how to solve them.
